Working every day in the world of software developers and knowledge management, I think we’re at a tipping point that will change not just where we work—home or office—and how we work—remote, async—but the nature of our cities, our towns, and with them, our civilization. From London to São Paulo, from Boston to Berlin, there is an opportunity for the metropolis to emerge as something different, something equally essential, but perhaps more equitable, affordable, and humane. My gut is telling me that a lot of companies will seek to leverage this economic downturn and layoffs to threaten staff into returning.
The dialogue until now has been fairly conciliatory, but we will start to see more come or go type of ultimatums…I am convinced.

This means that an employee who works as an Engineer 2 in a rural town in India will be in the exact same salary band as an Engineer 2 who is working from San Francisco, CA. We’re calling this “One Job, One Pay” (OJOP).

“In the past, the ’three S’ was sun, sea and sand. We’re moving it to serenity, spirituality and sustainability,” Uno said. Indonesia’s “digital nomad” visa would be eligible for five years, and Indonesia wouldn’t tax income received from overseas. Uno also promised speedier visa approvals and a greater frequency of flights in the interim.
