Remote work is killing big offices. Cities must change to survive

Ben Popper | The Overflow

There is something revolutionary in there. Working every day in the world of software developers and knowledge management, I think we’re at a tipping point that will change not just where we work—home or office—and how we work—remote, async—but the nature of our cities, our towns, and with them, our civilization. From London to São Paulo, from Boston to Berlin, there is an opportunity for the metropolis to emerge as something different, something equally essential, but perhaps more equitable, affordable, and humane. To get this transformation right, we can learn from the world of open-source software.

Are companies preparing to end Remote?

mouzogu | Hacker News

My gut is telling me that a lot of companies will seek to leverage this economic downturn and layoffs to threaten staff into returning.

The dialogue until now has been fairly conciliatory, but we will start to see more come or go type of ultimatums…I am convinced.

How Marginalized Workers Can Make the Most of Remote Work

Alan Henry | Wired

Whether you’re hybrid or at the home office full-time, here’s what you can do to focus your energy, connect meaningfully, and use flexibility to your advantage.

Remote work may not be working any more

Javier E. David | Axios

The challenges of remote work are getting harder and harder to ignore, as employees and bosses alike grapple with the realities of indefinite separation from the office.

The idea of working in the office, all day, every day? No thanks, say workers

Andrea Hsu | NPR

More than two years into a pandemic that has no clear end, the debate over remote work has only intensified. Working from home isn’t possible in many jobs. But for those who have the option, it’s now evident that it is feasible, even beneficial.

But how beneficial is a point of contention between workers and their bosses. Some bosses are deciding too much is lost when people aren’t in the office and it’s time to come back.

One Job, One Pay

Sue Odio | Stellate

As a fully distributed company, we’ve made a bold decision not to anchor pay to employees’ physical location, no matter where they are in the world. This means that an employee who works as an Engineer 2 in a rural town in India will be in the exact same salary band as an Engineer 2 who is working from San Francisco, CA. We’re calling this “One Job, One Pay” (OJOP).

Remote workers may soon be able to live and work tax free in Bali, under a 5-year ‘digital nomad’ visa

Nicholas Gordon | Fortune

“In the past, the ’three S’ was sun, sea and sand. We’re moving it to serenity, spirituality and sustainability,” Uno said. Indonesia’s “digital nomad” visa would be eligible for five years, and Indonesia wouldn’t tax income received from overseas. Uno also promised speedier visa approvals and a greater frequency of flights in the interim.

I’m sick of people dismissing remote work as…

I’m sick of people dismissing remote work as “pretending to work” or “working in your pjs.” How about “not wasting valuable hours of your life commuting” or “being a part of your kids’ lives.”
