Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Partner Content | University of Colorado Boulder
A new study of 7,704 employees found that fully remote workers reported the highest levels of well-being, while onsite employees reported the lowest. The research also found little evidence that remote workers felt less connected to their colleagues or workplace culture. The findings suggest that flexibility and employee choice may play a bigger role in well-being and retention than where people work.
FBI investigating North Korean remote IT staffer working for US agency
Justin Doubleday | Federal News Network
The FBI is investigating a case involving a North Korean remote IT worker who allegedly obtained a position supporting a U.S. federal agency. The incident highlights growing risks around remote hiring, including forged identities, AI-generated documents and deepfakes, and gaps in identity verification and vetting processes. Experts say organizations should strengthen hiring controls and verify the identities, backgrounds, and credentials of remote workers with access to sensitive systems.
Remote work not a free pass for bosses to ignore workplace needs
Susan Hornsby-Geluk | NZ Herald
Many workplace teams have embraced remote working and Zoom-style technology, but employers still need to consider the impact of such practices on individual staff. A recent UK Employment Tribunal decision highlights how requiring employees to keep their cameras on during remote meetings may raise disability discrimination concerns when reasonable accommodations are requested. The case also underscores a broader issue: employers must genuinely consider how remote and digital workplace requirements affect individual employees rather than relying on one-size-fits-all policies.
Dropbox’s new co-CEO says remote work is staying. Applications per job are nearly 7x higher since going virtual-first.
Alina Maria Stan | The Next Web
Dropbox’s new co-CEO Ashraf Alkarmi says the company’s virtual-first model is here to stay, with applications per job nearly seven times higher than before the policy was introduced in 2021. The company reports its highest offer acceptance rates and lowest attrition since going virtual-first, while 74% of 2026 hires say the flexibility of the model influenced their decision to join. Dropbox still uses in-person hack weeks, off-sites and team gatherings to maintain connection while keeping everyday work remote.
This Stunning Country Was Named the Healthiest and Safest Place for Digital Nomads Thanks to Its Safety, Peace, and Life Expectancy
Lauren Dana Ellman | Travel + Leisure
Iceland was named the healthiest and safest country for digital nomads in a ranking of 50 countries with active digital nomad visa programs. The study evaluated healthcare quality, personal safety, global peace, life expectancy, and air quality, with Iceland ranking first thanks to its strong performance across all five categories. Taiwan, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany, and Croatia rounded out the top 10.
165,000 digital nomads have left the UK: Which countries are they moving to?
Indrabati Lahiri | Euronews
An estimated 165,000 UK professionals have relocated abroad to work remotely, with Spain, Portugal, Croatia, and Estonia emerging as popular destinations. Lower living costs, better weather, strong internet infrastructure, digital nomad visas, and improved work-life balance are among the main reasons attracting British remote workers. Spain topped the list, while Portugal, Croatia, and Estonia offer their own mix of visa options, coworking communities, digital infrastructure, and expat-friendly environments.
AI was supposed to destroy jobs. Where’s the carnage?
Varsha Bansal | The Guardian
Predictions of an AI-driven jobs apocalypse have not yet materialized, but AI is already changing how people work. Research suggests there has been little evidence of major job displacement so far, while employers increasingly expect candidates to have practical AI skills. Economists say the biggest shift is currently in the nature of jobs rather than the number of jobs, with AI consolidating roles, raising skill expectations, and creating new work around AI systems. Over time, more workers could also move toward freelance and contract work as companies adapt to changing skill needs.
Meta and Nvidia plant ‘very firm flag’ in open-weight AI race led by Chinese Labs
Jonathan Vanian | CNBC
Meta and Nvidia released new open-weight AI models as U.S. tech companies step up efforts to compete with leading Chinese AI labs. Meta unveiled Muse Glimmer and announced plans to open the weights of its Muse Spark 1.2 model, while Nvidia released Nemotron 3.5 Lightning with its training datasets, techniques, and model weights. The push reflects growing industry support for open-weight AI, which proponents say can increase competition, innovation, transparency, and access to AI technology.
